Department of Public Works
The Town of Westwood has an immediate opening for a Mechanic to join the Department of Public Works. The ideal candidate will be skilled in automotive maintenance and repair work on heavy equipment, trucks and other Public Works vehicles and equipment, and will exhibit a willingness to work cooperatively with supervisors and peers. The position works under the general direction of the Head Mechanic.
Responsibilities and duties include:
- Repair and maintain town vehicles, heavy equipment and all other Public Works vehicles, including front-end loaders, backhoes, and various trucks; perform major and minor engine repair on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.
- Repair and test brake systems, suspension systems, exhaust systems, heating/cooling systems, and transmissions.
- Install special equipment such as plow frames, lights, radios, and special wiring; perform electric, acetylene and arc welding as needed.
- Perform complex diagnostic and repair work using sophisticated testing equipment.
- Operate specialized and heavy equipment such as backhoe, front-end loader, road sander, asphalt roller and other Public Works vehicles; perform manual labor incidental to operating assigned equipment.
- Operate vehicles providing roadway snow removal, sanding and scraping ice; assist in emergency highway repairs and in other Public Works related emergency repairs.
- Provide on-call service during snow emergencies.
- Perform Heavy Equipment Operator’s duties when not assigned to mechanical work.
Qualifications and experience:
- High School graduate or equivalent; specialized training in auto mechanics and other specialty equipment; 5 years’ experience in maintenance and repair of diverse equipment used in Public Works operations, including 3 years’ experience repairing hydraulic equipment, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques, equipment and procedures used in motor equipment repair and maintenance. Knowledge of repair methods for heavy, diesel and electrical equipment. Knowledge of hydraulic systems.
- Massachusetts Class B/Commercial Driver’s License required. Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s license required, 2A preferred, 2B, 4G and 1C required. Additional certification in equipment repair preferred. Massachusetts Vehicle Inspection license desirable.

- Full time, 40-hours per week, union position that includes a comprehensive benefits package.
- Annual salary range $67,928 - $79,589 in 8 steps with ample overtime opportunities.
